๐ The Story of Gomoku
Gomoku (ไบ็ฎ, "five items") is an abstract strategy board game originally from China, known as Wu Zi Qi (ไบๅญๆฃ). Played on a 15ร15 grid with black and white stones, the objective is simple: be the first to get exactly five stones in a row โ horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.
For centuries, Gomoku was considered a balanced game of pure skill. The earliest records trace back to the Tang Dynasty (618โ907 AD), and it spread across East Asia under many names โ Renju in Japan, Five in a Row in the West. It was beloved for its elegant simplicity: easy to learn, impossibly hard to master.
Then came the computers.
๐ค The AI Revolution
In the early 2000s, AI researchers began tackling Gomoku with minimax search and pattern evaluation. By 2010, programs like Yixin and FMOGOMOKU were playing at superhuman levels. The game was "solved" โ meaning optimal play from the first move leads to a forced win for black.
This discovery was a watershed moment. Gomoku became one of the first games where AI proved that the first player has a mathematical advantage so overwhelming that no amount of human intuition could overcome it. The AI's strategies โ subtle fork setups, double-threat traps, and positional sacrifices โ were entirely novel. Humans had played Gomoku for 1,400 years, and machines showed us we'd been playing it wrong.
Today, Gomoku AI engines use Alpha-Beta pruning, iterative deepening, and sophisticated pattern databases to play at levels no human can reach. This game's engine is a tribute to that journey โ from ancient Chinese boards to the frontier of machine intelligence.
โ๏ธ Difficulty Levels
AI picks randomly from nearby cells. Great for learning the rules or casual play.
AI evaluates board positions and picks the best single move. A solid warm-up opponent.
2-ply Alpha-Beta search โ the AI looks ahead two moves (its move + your response). Requires real strategy.
4-ply Alpha-Beta with pattern evaluation. Searches 4 moves deep โ the kind of play that will make you rethink every opening.
GM-level engine highlights the best move for both sides on the board. Use it to study positions and learn patterns.
